Young Searsport looks to make Western Class D playoff push
Searsport — The following is a synopsis of the 2013-14 Searsport District High School boys basketball team:
Coach/years coached current team: R.J. Robertson, first year.
Last year's record/playoff information: 5-13, 15th in Eastern Class C. The Vikings did not qualify for the playoffs.
Roster: Juniors Jacob Powell (6-foot 4-inch forward), Jay Burkard (5-9 forward), Isaiah Mentas (6-0 forward) and Dylon Grant (5-9 guard); sophomores Troy Reynolds (5-10 guard), Bryce Shorey (5-9 forward), Eric Phillips (5-5 guard), Cody Parks (5-10 forward), Kyle Moore (5-6 guard) and Brayden Perkins (5-6 guard); and freshmen Barrett Grant (6-0 guard) and Mitchell Philbrook (5-11 forward).
Known graduation losses: Jake Kenniston, Dyler Sieber, Buddy Ellis, Austin Bean, Dillan Moody, Alex Carroll and Dylan Seidl.
Significant impact players: Powell, Reynolds and Grant.
Team strengths: Youth, eagerness to learn and athleticism.
Team goals: “To improve every time we step out on the floor, become a stronger team unit and qualify for the Western Maine Class D tournament,” said Robertson.
Top league opponents: Forest Hills of Jackman and North Haven.
Outlook: The Vikings have made the switch to Western Class D this season but will keep a predominately Eastern Class C schedule. Searsport returns only two players who saw significant time on the floor last year in Powell and Reynolds, but coach Robertson feels a trip to the postseason is not out of the question.
“Overall we are a young and inexperienced team with only two players who saw significant minutes last year,” the coach said. “Practices are going well, the guys are working hard and are adjusting to new roles. We will continue to learn and improve as the season progresses.”
