Youth movement for Belfast pool athletes
Belfast — The following is a synopsis of the 2013-14 Belfast Area High School girls swim team:
Coach/years coached current team: Donna Kelly, seventh year.
Last year's record/playoff information: The Lions finished 19th (24 points) at the state Class B championships and fourth (162 points) at the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B championships.
Roster: Seniors Lacey Durkee (freestyle, butterfly), Amelia Kockerols (free, breaststroke), Alexis Ames (free, breast) and Lindsey Ward (free); junior Ciya Freeman (free); sophomores Alison Hills (free, individual medley) and Hannah White (free, backstroke, diving); and freshmen Kaylen Ottman (free, IM), Jessica Clapp (free, IM, breast), Genevieve Schortz (free), Morgan Fernald (free, back, IM, diving) and Brittany Steele (free, back).
Known graduation losses: Geneva Bielenberg, Natalie Calligan, Maria Swebilius, Kalyn Robbins and Hannah Meiden.
Significant impact swimmers/divers: Durkee, Ottman, Fernald and Clapp.
Team strengths: Youth and potential for growth.
Team goals: To have all swimmers improve on their times, have a positive attitude and to enjoy practices and meets every day.
Top league/regional opponent: Camden Hills.
Outlook: The Lions lost a handful of talented swimmers to graduation and will go through a bit of a youth movement this year in the pool, though coach Kelley said she has gotten strong efforts from many of her young student-athletes in the early stages of the regular season.
