Lincoln County’s Hooked on Reading Roundtable Discussion Group will be gathering at Spectrum Generations Coastal Community Center, 521 Main Street in Damariscotta on February 17 at 1 p.m. Join the center’s book group as they enter into a lively discussion and interactive roundtable conversation about “The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life” by Alice Schroeder.

Snowball is the book recounting the life and times of one of the most respected men in the world, Warren Buffett. The legendary Omaha investor has never written a memoir, but now he has allowed one writer, Alice Schroeder, unprecedented access to explore directly with him and with those closest to him his work, opinions, struggles, triumphs, follies, and wisdom. The result is the personally revealing and complete biography of the man known everywhere as “The Oracle of Omaha.”  In shaping its definitive portrait of Mr. Buffett, “The Snowball” need not make excessive claims of his importance. With story after story, Ms. Schroeder makes that self-evident. “No group of shareholders in history,” she writes, with one eye on her subject’s life history and the other on his legacy, “had ever missed their C.E.O. as much as Berkshire’s shareholders would miss Buffett when he was finally gone.”  On the 23rd discuss why as well as book reviewers comments such as:

“The mandatory book to read in these treacherous times of financial crisis.…A thoughtful and intimate biography of the globe’s wisest investor.” –Forbes

“Even people who don't care a whit about business will be intrigued by this portrait… Schroeder, a former Morgan Stanley insurance-industry analyst, spent years interviewing Buffett, and the result is a side of the Oracle of Omaha that has rarely been seen.” —Time Magazine

Schroeder, the author of this book, won the trust of Buffett during their ten-year association. Ms. Schroeder was born in Texas, and she earned an undergraduate degree and her MBA at the University of Texas at Austin before moving east to work in finance. She is a former CPA and lives in Connecticut with her husband.

Discuss why Warren Buffett, the richest person in the world, the widely quoted "Oracle of Omaha, who before this book, had never shared his story so completely or offered such total access to his family and his closest associates permitted Schroeder to do so when local fiction and non-fiction readers gather for the Center’s Hooked on Reading groups discussion on February 17 at 1pm. Seasonal visitors, baby boomers, young people, and home schooled students are always welcome to join the group’s monthly discussions.
