The long-defunct Belfast ski area, once known as “El Depot,” is getting some use again, thanks to Friday’s fresh snow.

Earlier this year the city Parks and Recreation Committee adopted the overgrown hillsides near upper High Street/City Point Road, and set about clearing brush and small trees from the trails to make them usable once again.

Parks officials have billed the revived ski area as ideal for tubing and sledding. Some snowboarders frequented the area in the years before the city reclaimed the recreation area, threading their way through the sparsely wooded north face of an adjacent slope.

With the three smaller slopes once again cleared, snowboarders John McCafferty, Dexter Look and Abe Staples spent New Year’s Day testing out the terrain.
