The arrival of new babies near the start each year is news around the country, and while many communities have already announced their first baby of 2010, Waldo County General Hospital continues to wait for the proverbial water to break.

As of Monday, Jan. 4, WCGH reports no mothers-to-be in active labor.

Toni Mailloux, former editor of the Waldo Independent and current community relations coordinator at WCGH, said it’s not unusual for a New Year’s baby to take its time, but they eventually arrive.

“I do remember at least one year when the New Year’s baby didn’t arrive until around Jan. 8. I would be surprised if we don’t have one in time for this week’s issue [of The Republican Journal], but you never know,” said Mailloux in an e-mail Monday morning.

In the meantime, we’ll all be waiting for that first bundle of joy to arrive, and to heap appropriate accolades on its perfect timing.
