In preparation for the federal government’s once-a-decade stock-taking, the US Census Bureau will be conducting a series of employment tests for prospective 2010 census workers at numerous locations throughout the Midcoast in the coming weeks.

A list of testing sites currently set up in Knox and Waldo counties appears below. Many of the sites will hold multiple sessions. Because of the number of individual testing sessions Census officials suggest that interested parties call the CENSUS JOBS hotline at 866-861-2010 to schedule an appointment to take the employment test, or sign up online at

The Census office based in Augusta, covering Franklin, Kennebec, Sagadahoc, Lincoln, Knox, Waldo, Hancock and Washington counties, will be hiring approximately 1,250 individuals throughout the eight counties. Jobs in Knox and Waldo counties have pay rates starting at $13.25 per hour for door-to-door census data collectors. Some supervisor positions will be available paying up to $16.25.

Early operations are slated to begin in February and March. The busiest time is anticipated to be mid-March to mid-June, with operations winding down in the latter part of the summer.
