Nils Martin Karlsen Midttveit, 94, died peacefully Jan. 3, 2010, surrounded by his loving family at a Bangor hospital.

He was born July 12, 1915, in Telavag, Norway, the son of Karl M. and Kornelia K. Midttveit.

Nils graduated from Engineers School, Bergen, Norway. He served as a chief engineer on board Norwegian Merchant Marine ships at the beginning of World War II. Nils served in the U.S. Army-Air Force in Bar Harbor, where he met his first wife, Evelyn A. Sprague, whom he married in 1944.

He then worked for H. W. Ramberg Inc., a ship repair company in Brooklyn, N.Y., until his retirement in 1980. Nils lived in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, N.Y., with his family until retiring to Stockton Springs.

He was a member of Sons of Norway and Redeemer Lutheran Church, Bangor. Nils mentored his children and grandchildren that post-secondary education needed to be completed. He was a dearly loved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, great-uncle, brother and friend, and will be dearly missed.

The family thanks the staff at the dialysis center of Eastern Maine Medical Center and the staff of the fourth floor of Eastern Maine Medical Center for all their kindness and compassionate care.

He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Bjorg (Dame) Midttveit of Brewer; children, Nils E. Midttveit and his wife, Jane, of Walnutport, Pa., Margaret Costain and her husband, David, of Brewer, and Carl Midttveit and his wife, Diane, of Jackson, N.J.; 12 grandchildren, Wayne Shaefe, Torrey Shaefe and his wife, Michelle, Tyler Shaefe, Wendy Pastio, Nils E. Midttveit Jr. and his wife, Megan, Ellen Habaj and her husband, Sani, Heather Midttveit, Thomas Costain, Kenneth Costain, Todd Miller, Erica Midttveit and Kristin Midttveit; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife and mother to his four children, Evelyn Alma (Sprague), in 1991; a daughter, Harriet Emma Shaefe, in 1994; his second wife, Beatrice Eidsvaag, in 1993; a sister, Mathilda; and a brother, Reinholdt.

Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 7, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 540 Essex St., Bangor, with the Rev. Elaine Hewes officiating.

Relatives and friends are invited to share conversation and refreshments after the service in the church reception hall. Interment will be in the spring at Ledgelawn Cemetery, Bar Harbor.
