Local author Kate Braestrup will introduce her new book “Marriage and Other Acts of Charity,” Wednesday, Jan. 13, 4-6 p.m. at Camden Public Library at 55 Main St.

The New York Times bestselling author of “Here If You Need Me” offers a fresh look at marriage, faith and family in “Marriage and Other Acts of Charity,” released by Reagan Arthur Books.

Braestrup is no stranger to loss or love. Her 2007 memoir, “Here If You Need Me,” received the Barnes & Noble Discover Award for nonfiction and gained fans across the country with its heartfelt voice and mix of humorous and deeply moving stories.

After the death of her first husband, Drew Griffith, Braestrup held her family together while she grieved and, at the same time, pursued Griffith’s dream of becoming a minister. She ultimately found her calling as a chaplain to Maine search-and-rescue workers, giving comfort to people whose loved ones were missing and to the rescuers themselves.

As a minister, Braestrup, who lives in Lincolnville with her second husband, artist Simon van der Ven, and their children, has presided over numerous weddings and knows full well what life is like after the ceremony.

In her latest book, she delves further into her marriage with Griffith, a Maine State Police Trooper whose death prompted the spiritual journey related in “Here If You Need Me.” She pulls back the curtain to reveal a relationship that was full of love, rough spots and 3 a.m. fish tank rescue cleanups — in short, a marriage to which most people can relate.

Braestrup, chaplain for the Maine Warden Service, once again brings together her personal experiences, observations and meditation on God to show how love figures in all of our relationships.

After launching her book locally, Braestrup will head out on a book tour that includes stops in Chicago, Minneapolis, New Hampshire, Vermont and, back on the Midcoast, Friday, Jan. 29, at 7 p.m. at Searsport’s Left Bank Books.
