On the heels of an 8-0 loss to Lewiston Dec. 28, the Midcoast Ice Cats skated on Monday afternoon at the Midcoast Recreation Center by hosting the Waterville jayvee ice hockey team.

While the Ice Cats (5-2-1), a cooperative club team that includes student-athletes from many Midcoast high schools, would have liked to have skated off the ice with their sixth win of the season, in the end, they were happy to settle for a draw as a goal by Yannick Price-Prevot with just over a minute remaining in the third period forged a 5-5 tie.

The goal was the second of the day for Price-Prevot, while also knocking the puck into the net for the Ice Cats were Tyler Hadyniak, Jacob Perry and Cal Robbins. Parker Spear, Kyle Hadyniak and Stephen Hand also added assists for the hosts.

Aaron Bard led the Purple Panthers with two goals and an assist, while Lauren Massey, Eric Samson and Lance Lefebrve also scored goals and Ryan Tozier added an assist.

Ice Cat Aaron Daniello made 24 saves between the pipes for the hosts, while Purple Panther goalie Dakota Gendreau turned away 11 shots.

The Purple Panthers got on the scoreboard first when Massey skated in on a two-on-one and snapped a shot over the left shoulder of Daniello to put Waterville ahead 1-0. Perry then tied the game for the Ice Cats on an assist from Hand. Bard then beat Dennison on a pair of goals and Lefebrve another, seemingly putting the game out of reach for the hosts.

Price-Prevot and Robbins each scored to cut the Ice Cats’ deficit to 4-3 and, after Samson put Waterville back in front by two goals, Tyler Hadyniak slammed home a rebound to again bring the Ice Cats within one goal.

After Ice Cats coach Mike Schroeder decided to pull Dennison off the ice to give the hosts a man advantage with less than two minutes to play, Price-Prevot scored the tying goal with a little over a minute left.

In the waning seconds the ‘Cats had one last barrage as Tyler Hadyniak nearly scored in the last second of the contest, but Gendreau stoned the scoring attempt to leave the final score a 5-5 tie.
