It was an up-and-down night on the court for many Waldo County teams Thursday, with teams from Belfast, Mount View of Thorndike and Searsport all seeing action.

The Searsport and Mount View boys, along with the Mount View girls, all tasted victory against their respective foes, while the Belfast boys and girls dropped their contests against Oak Hill of Sabattus.


Mount View 58, Gardiner 50 … At Gardiner, the Mustangs overcame a five-point deficit at halftime and received a strong contribution from senior forward Michael Cochrane as the visitors secured their seventh win of the season with an eight-point triumph.

The score was tied 10-10 after the first quarter, while the Tigers took a 26-21 lead at halftime. The Tigers clung to a 41-37 lead after three quarters.

Cochrane tossed in 24 points for the ‘Stangs (7-2), while Tim Alton added 12 points; Zach Babin, 10; Dylan Keller, six; Eric Nealley, four; and Jason Hughes, two. The Mustangs are ranked fifth in the most recent Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Eastern Class B.

Chris Kimball paced the Tigers with 15 points, while Spencer Allen added 11; Mike Trahan and Aaron Tolman, each nine; and Dan Seymour and Joe Coughlan, each two.

The Tigers were 6-of-7 (86 percent) from the free-throw line, while the Mustangs were 14-of-19 (74 percent).

Searsport 62, Central 49 … At Searsport, the host Vikings got a terrific effort from senior Evan Kingsbury as SDHS pulled out a win over the Red Devils. The Vikings led 19-13, 36-28 and 47-39 at the quarter breaks.

Kingsbury poured in 21 points to lead Searsport (3-7), while James Seekins also turned in a 17-point effort for the hosts. Seekins had only one field goal on the night, but converted 15 of Searsport’s 20 free throws. Also breaking into the scoring column for the Vikings was Dillon Moody with 10 points, while Rocky Faunce added nine; Shane Seekins, three; and Buddy Ellis, two.

Matt Melanson keyed the Red Devils (1-7) with 16 points, while Cole Haskell added 15.

Oak Hill 62, Belfast 41 … At Sabattus, the host Raiders added to their lead after each quarter and pulled away from the winless Lions in the fourth quarter en route to the victory. Oak Hill led 13-11, 23-17 and 43-24 at the quarter breaks.

Tim Levesque poured in 28 points to lead the Raiders, while Ben Foss added nine; Chad Asselin, seven;Brian Bradstreet, five; Trevor Samson and Cam Morin, each four; Eric Lapointe, three; and Jake Samson, two.

Dylan Webster and Derrick Bernosky each tossed in 10 points for Belfast (0-8), while Brad Reed added eight; Jack Davis, five; and Josh Beal, Eric Mitchell, Dustin Howes and Adam Heroux, all two.

The Lions were 8-of-20 (40 percent) from the free-throw line, while the Raiders were 15-of-23 (65 percent).


Mount View 32, Gardiner 28 … At Gardiner, the visiting Mustangs pulled away from the host Tigers in the fourth quarter of a competitive contest to secure their fifth win of the season. Gardiner led 9-5 after the first quarter and 13-11 at halftime, while the Mustangs grabbed a 21-20 lead after three quarters.

Hayleigh Kein’s 10-point fourth-quarter led the charge for the visitors, with the junior guard ending up with 18 points. Chrissy Larrabee also had 10 points for the visitors, Channing Murphy added two and Delainey Kein and Anna Piotti each one.

Taylor Banister, Hannah Lawrence and Jenna Moore were the leading scorers for Gardiner with six points apiece; while Kelly Macomber and Carly Pelletier each added four; and Emily Kuzma two.

The ‘Stangs were 9-of-16 (56 percent) from the free-throw line, while the Tigers were 7-of-13 (54 percent).
