Led by Andrew Baxter’s first-place performance, the Camden Hills Alpine ski squads whipped past their competition Jan. 12 to take firsts in both girls and boys slalom events at Hermon Mountain.

“All in all, the kids skied very well,” said veteran Camden Hills coach Chris Christie. “We have had a couple of great weeks of training. The next couple of races will give us a good measure on where we stand against the elite teams of Class B.”

The teams represented at the Jan. 12 meet included Camden Hills, Hampden Academy, John Bapst of Bangor, Greenville, Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln, Lee Academy, Bangor, Orono and Belfast (an independent who skis with Camden Hills).

For the ‘Jammers the event marked the second competition this season and showed considerable improvements over their previous race, the coach said.

The boys team scores were: Camden Hills 24, Hampden Academy 38, John Babst 55, Lee 88 and Greenville 91. The girls team scores were: Camden Hills 30, Hampden Academy 50, Greenville 52, Bangor 56 and John Bapst 109.

For individual Windjammer boys results were: 1, Baxter, 68.78; 4, Taylor Harrison, 79.17; 7, Micah Heanssler, 81.40; 12, Cole Ellison, 87.89; 13, Tilden Lincoln, 87.99; and 14, Stephen Gross, 88.84.

The individual Windjammer girls results were: 5, Macy Jones, 83.45; 7, Simone Cautela, 89.46; 8, Jessie Mathews, 91.36; 10, Marnie Merrill, 92.82; 11, Caitlin Throne, 93.42; 13, Hayley Aydelott, 95.68; 17, Allie Heckerd, 98.16; 20, Emma Conover, 1:01.17; 22, Morgan Farley, 1:02.04; 24, Olivia Hamalainen, 1:05.70; 25, Jenna Hill, 1:08.19; 26, Sophie Salas, 1:08.56; 27, Jamie Burgess, 1:09.69; and 32, Alice Limoges, 1:34.25.

Jane Ouilette of Belfast also skis with the ‘Jammers. She placed fourth in the race in 79.34. “She is a very solid skier and is rapidly becoming a great ski racer,” Christie said.

The Windjammers’ also raced Jan. 16 at Kents Hill followed by a giant slalom meet at Black Mountain Monday, Jan. 18, with those results being published later.
