A Belfast man said to have dementia and diabetes was found dead midday Jan. 17, eight hours after he went missing.

John “Butch” Caswell is believed to have wandered from his Union Street home as early as 4 a.m. the same day. A search party composed of members of his church found Caswell in waist deep water in Belfast Bay near Heritage Park, not far from his Union Street home, according to Belfast Police Officer Eric Kelley. Micah Falchsbart, 17, jumped into the water to rescue the man and pull him to shore, according to police.

Kelley said members of the search party attempted CPR on Caswell who was later brought to Waldo County General Hospital and pronounced dead at 12:44 p.m.

VillageSoup posted a notice late Sunday morning after a neighbor notified the paper that Caswell was missing.

Belfast Police Chief Jeff Trafton said he plans to send a letter of appreciation to the teen for his efforts.
