A brief warm spell and several days of persistent snowfall have delayed the opening of Kirby Lake, aka “The Muck,” for ice skating. Speaking last week, Parks and Recreation Director Jim Bell said ice on the pond between Miller Street and Lincolnville Avenue was nine inches thick. In response to concerns from the City Council about ice breakthroughs Bell consulted with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. The agency’s response, according to Bell: “We don’t certify ice.”
