In an effort to get people moving and help beat the winter blues, the Penobscot Bay YMCA will hold its first annual Snowman TrYathlon on Saturday, Feb. 6.

The event is set to get underway at 9 a.m. at the YMCA in Rockport. The registration fee is $45 for pre-registration and $50 the day of the event.

The Snowman TrYathlon is unlike any typical triathlon. The swim and biking portion of the Snowman will be done inside the YMCA building on Union Street in Rockport, and the 5-kilometer run will take place outdoors.

In shifts of 16 people at a time, individuals and teams will swim a half-mile in the YMCA pool, then bike for 30 minutes on a stationary bike at a set resistance for all pedalers. Once the indoor portion of the “triathlon” is complete, the event moves outside.

The 5k route is the same as the Turkey Trot the YMCA hosted in November. It will begin at the YMCA and continue down Limerock Street to Chestnut Street, past the Aldemere Farm, through the town of Rockport and back up Union Street, taking runners and walkers back to the YMCA’s parking lot.

The only timed events during the triathlon will be the swimming and 5k portions, although participants must be on the stationary bikes for 30 minutes.

Sandy Bodamer, coordinator of the event and the YMCA fitness center director, hopes that since the event falls on the same weekend as the National Toboggan races, it will attract more participants from other areas. Bodamer also said the YMCA has collaborated with the Camden-Rockport-Lincolnville Chamber of Commerce to help spread the word of the triathlon beyond the Camden-Rockport area.

“This is not going to be a rigid type of event as it is our first year,” Bodamer said. She said the main goal is to get people active and moving in the cold winter months. She is also hoping people will want to challenge themselves and try something that may be a little out of the box.

There will be free t-shirts for the first 50 registrants. Prizes and refreshments are included.

The YMCA is also providing a coupon of $20 off the registration fee. The coupon is available at the YMCA or online at
