Beginning on Wednesday, Feb. 3, the downtown Farnsworth Art Museum will present a class on calligraphy and book arts. Words Made New with Jan Owen will take place on four consecutive Wednesdays from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at the Farnsworth’s Gamble Education Center at the corner of Union and Grace streets.

Participants will join Belfast artist Owen in exploring ways to write words by learning some informal calligraphy and mark making and then creating several handmade book structures in which to save the words. Each class will present a new aspect of lettering using a variety of tools and a bookmaking project. There will be time for practice and questions. Students will then select the words and format to work towards a final project.

Owen has taught calligraphy and book arts from Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Maine to the Oregon College of Art and Craft. Her interest combines the discipline of calligraphy with the expressive freedom of brushwork and mark making. Her work is shown internationally and is in numerous collections. Examples of her work may be viewed at

The fee for this class is $100, $85 for museum members, which includes a $20 materials fee. Enrollment is limited to 15 students. To register, call 596-0949 or visit
