A Republican candidate has filed her intent to challenge an incumbent Democratic House member from the Midcoast.

Wendy Pelletier of Hope has filed paperwork with the Maine Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices as a first step to be a publicly financed candidate for the Maine House District 44 seat. That seat is held by Democratic Rep. Andrew O’Brien of Lincolnville.

O’Brien, who is serving his first term, has also filed his intent to be a publicly financed candidate.

House District 44 consists of the Knox County towns of Hope and Appleton, as well as the Waldo County towns of Lincolnville, Searsmont, Morrill and Liberty.

The deadline for party candidates to file nomination papers with the Maine Secretary of State’s Office to get on the June 8 primary ballot is March 15. Unenrolled candidates have until June 1 to file in order to get on the Nov. 2 general election ballot along with the party primary winners.
