On Thursday, Feb. 11 at 10 a.m., Ellie O’Leary and Sarah Smiley will read from their own work on “Writers Forum,” a monthly feature, hosted by Joan Clemons on Community Radio WERU-FM.

O’Leary currently teaches Confronting Your Poetry Phobia at Senior College in Belfast, where she is a regular instructor. O’Leary also teaches writing at Pyramid Life Center in Paradox, N.Y., each July. Her work has appeared in Northern New England Review, Narrimissic Notebook and Wolf Moon Journal. She blogs at WritingThruIt.blogspot.com and is a member of Grub Street and the Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance. Currently O’Leary is editing and polishing her memoir, “Up Home Again, One Woman’s Search for Meaning.” A graduate of Bates College, she grew up in Freedom and lives in Monroe.

Smiley is the author of a syndicated newspaper column, which reaches more than 2 million readers weekly. In the Bangor Daily News, her column appears every Monday. A Navy wife, Smiley has published two books, “Going Overboard: The Misadventures of a Military Wife” and “I’m Just Saying,” a collection of essays. She has been featured in The New York Times Magazine and Newsweek, as well as on ABC’s “Nightline,” CNN’s “American Morning” and “Sunday Morning” and the CBS “Early Show,” among others.

As the daughter of a career Navy pilot, Smiley grew up amid aircraft carriers and Navy bases in Virginia Beach, Virginia. She is married to a Navy flight instructor. In addition to her confessions of military life, she also writes about her role as mother of three rambunctious boys, ages 9, 7 and 3. Smiley currently lives in Bangor.

“Writers Forum.” features Maine authors, current residents as well as summer visitors to Maine and both published and unpublished, reading their own compositions. The program airs the second Thursday monthly on Community Radio WERU, 89.9 FM, also podcasting and streaming online at weru.org. Past programs are also archived online.
