On Thursday night, the Mount View girls basketball team played like a squad that wanted to be, in fact, probably should be a regional playoff participant, while Belfast again demonstrated its overall improvement with a solid second-half effort.

That was the scenario that faced both Waldo County squads in their final regular-season games Thursday night in Belfast. When the dust had settled, the visiting Mustangs had earned a 42-32 victory.

Mount View used a tough halfcourt trapping defense to take control of the game in the second quarter.

The Mustangs finished the campaign 8-10 and 12th (41.6049 Heal Points) in Eastern Class B, while Belfast ended 3-15 and 18th (6.5123 points). Neither squad will advance to the upcoming playoffs as only the top 10 teams move on in the 19-team region. Mount Desert Island (16-2, 135.8025 points) is first in the region.

Thursday’s matchup between Waldo County rivals saw Mount View grab an 8-5 first-quarter lead and take control by outscoring the Lions 15-3 in the second stanza. Belfast tried to climb back into the contest in the second half by outscoring the Mustangs 24-18 over the final 16 minutes, however, the dye had been cast in the second quarter.

Leading Mount View’s offensive charge was Hayleigh Kein with 19 points, including making two 3-pointers and 7-of-10 free throws. Helping Kein were teammates Anna Piotti, Cheyenne Dyer and Chrissy Larrabee all with five points; Channing Murphy, four; and Lauren Smith, two. The Mustangs netted 11-of-21 foul shots (52 percent).

Kein was the key as she scored all of her points in the first three stanzas when the Mustangs grabbed the momentum. Kein tallied five points in the first quarter, eight in the second and six in the third.

For the Lions, Makayla Cummings led the charge with seven points, while Morgan Mansfield added six; Whitney Cross and Kelsey Woodbury, both four; Megan Curtis, Lexi Nelligan and Caroline Carr, all three; and Hayley Rae, two. BAHS connected on 15-of-27 free throws (56 percent).
