All eyes will be on the Mount View boys when the Maine Principals’ Association regional high school basketball playoffs begin next week because it is the Mustangs who will carry the torch as the lone representative in the postseason for Waldo County this winter.

While the Mount View are playoff bound, the Mount View, Searsport, Belfast and Islesboro girls, as well as the Searsport, Belfast and Islesboro boys, all fell short in their bids to qualify for the postseason.

That is the news as the final MPA Heal Points have been released.

The preliminary round of the playoffs will be Tuesday, Feb. 9 for girls and Wednesday, Feb. 10 for boys. The official regional playoffs at the tournament sites in Bangor and Augusta will begin over the weekend, Feb. 12-13.

This is the first time in years the MPA opted to have only the top 50 percent of the teams in a region qualify for postseason play. In recent years, the playoff qualifiers were two-thirds of the teams in a region.

The Eastern Class B tournament, which includes the Mustangs, will be held at the Bangor Auditorium.

The following are the final Heal Points for local Waldo County teams:

Boys

Mount View (15-3, 125.3086 points) finishes third and Belfast (1-17, 4.3210 points) 18th in Eastern Class B. Camden Hills (16-2, 140.4321 points) finishes first in the 19-team region. The top 10 squads qualify for the playoffs.

While the Lions failed to qualify for the playoffs, the Mustangs have earned the right to play at least one game at the Bangor Auditorium. Mount View will face No. 6 Old Town (12-6, 90.4321 points) in a quarterfinal playoff game on Friday, Feb. 12 at 5 p.m. in Bangor. The Mustangs and Coyotes do not play one another during the regular season.
