When the Shamrock, Thistle and Rose gift shop closed recently due to the retirement of its owners, Sharron Walsh and Joanne McNally, the Waldo County General Hospital Aid was one of many local nonprofit organizations that received donations of merchandise and display fixtures.

The Hospital Aid decided to assemble a basket of Celtic goods and hold a special raffle. The winner will be drawn at the regular Hospital Aid meeting on St. Patrick’s Day.

The featured item is the basket itself, handmade in Ireland by Kathleen McCormick. It is a market shopper basket of the type used for carrying eggs, bread or other produce to markets and is made of specially-grown brown and black maul and continental willow.

Inside are items from Ireland, Wales and Scotland, including a Navan silver brooch, a tiger eye necklace, a ceramic bell and thimble, a Royal Tara candy basket, a leather belt, hats, lotion and more from the Celtic shop. Other items, such as a leprechaun, shortbread, Irish tea, linen towels, a pillow, an Irish soda bread mix and a scones mix were donated from the hospital gift shop and Aid members. The total value of the basket and contents is $674.

The basket is on display at the hospital gift shop in the lobby of Waldo County General Hospital, 118 Northport Ave. Tickets are available in the gift shop for $1 each or 6 for $5. All proceeds benefit the hospital. For more information, call 930-6739.
