“Voices for Haiti: Piano and Poets,” a benefit performance to support Partners In Health and Doctors Without Borders, will be held at Belfast Free Library, 106 High St., Sunday, Feb. 21 at 3 p.m. Storm date for the event is Sunday, Feb. 28.
“Voices for Haiti” will be held upstairs in the Gammans Room, which features a beautiful Steinway grand piano, the use of which is made possible through support from the Belfast Coop Store. All proceeds raised will be used for ongoing relief projects in Haiti focused on food and shelter campaigns. Suggested donation is $10.
The event features 10 Belfast area poets — Meredith Buskin, Nancy Mimeses Carey, Karie Friedman, Betsy Headley, Shelley Johnson, Barbara Maria, Lauren Murray, Kathryn Robyn (performing original music), Elizabeth Schwab, and Karin Spitfire. Many will read to live jazz improvisation.
Luna Madidus (formerly Agharta Jazz) will play original jazz arrangements. The band members are Kristen Burkholder, vocalist; Mike Whitehead, trumpet; Tom Luther, piano; Doug Kennedy, bass and French horn; and Jeff Densmore, drums. Special guests are will be Ray Faria, tenor saxophone; Megan Orff, vocals; Mike Knowles, bass; and Phil Clement, guitar.
The afternoon also will feature musical duets featuring Burkholder and Luther.
