While a Waldo County high school wrestling team did not bring home a state Class B championship plaque as Belfast had the past two years, several student-athletes returned from Saturday’s tournament in Waldoboro with hardware, including one individual state crown.

Belfast’s Brent Waterman won the state 119-pound championship, while teammate Jordan Young (112) and Mount View’s Tristan Ripley (160) both finished as state runners-up in their respective weight classes.

Camden Hills, fresh off winning the Eastern Class B and Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference championships the previous two weeks, sealed its first state title since 2007 Saturday.

The Windjammers completed the postseason title trifecta a year after Belfast — which is situated a few miles from Camden Hills up the coast on Route 1 — had won back-to-back state crowns. Of course, Camden Hills also won the state title in 2007, meaning the Windjammers or Lions — along with a few Mountain Valley Falcons from Rumford — have ruled the state Class B mat world for the past four years and many other seasons before that.

The team scores from Saturday’s state championship meet were: Camden Hills 130, Mountain Valley 108, Morse of Bath 97, Fryeburg Academy 82.5, Oak Hill of Sabattus 71, Wells 70, Gardiner 61, Belfast 59, Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield 44, York 42.5, Ellsworth 23.5, Medomak Valley 21, Hermon 20, Mount View of Thorndike 18, Caribou and Old Town 17, Winslow 11, Lincoln Academy of Newcastle 8, Sumner of East Sullivan and Greely of Cumberland 1 and Georges Valley no score.

Waterman, along with all state champions in Class A, B and C, qualify for the 46th annual New England Interscholastic Wrestling Championships scheduled for Friday and Saturday, March 5-6 at the New Haven Athletic Center at Hillhouse High School in New Haven, Conn.

Besides Waterman, Young and Ripley, several other Midcoast grapplers placed among the top four in their weight classes Saturday. The following is summary of each local state qualifier and if they placed among the top four:
