The Waldo County YMCA announced that the Unity Foundation has issued a $1,500 challenge grant to the Y Family Triathlon Festival. The Y is actively seeking additional sponsorships for its first festival, to be held May 15.

Jim Wescott, Triathlon co-chair, stated, “The Waldo County YMCA is excited to host its first annual triathlon festival. Our race day will be filled with events that will be exciting and fun for the whole family. Unlike most other traditional races, we will feature a full sprint tri in the morning and a trio of children’s triathlons in the afternoon. We hope that families will take this opportunity to come and visit our beautiful area of Midcoast Maine.”

Dale Cross, Y executive director, added, “We are so grateful to the Unity Foundation for this challenge grant. We are humbled by the continued generosity of the foundation. Together we are building strong kids, strong families and strong communities.”

The Waldo County YMCA’s mission is to provide quality programs that promote the physical, mental, social and spiritual development of Waldo County children and families. In 2009, the Y distributed more than $74,000 in membership and program scholarships.

This grant honors the contributions of Bert and Coral Clifford, founders of the Unity Foundation. “The Unity Foundation is pleased to continue our partnership with the Waldo County YMCA”, said Unity Foundation Chairman Larry Sterrs. “We think this is a very special event that supports the children and families of Waldo County.”
