Rockland Public Library has announced the opening of nominations for the inaugural Poet Laureate of Rockland. Nominations also are being taken for Maine Senior Poet Laureate.

Rockland seeks city Poet Laureate

In conjunction with poetry activities at the library and in various locations around the city during National Poetry Month in April, Rockland Public Library is accepting nominations are open for the Honorary Office of Poet Laureate of Rockland. Individuals who have been previously published may be nominated or seek nomination by completing the Application for Nomination on the Library Web site, rocklandlibrary.org. Applications also are available in person at the library, 80 Union St.

Applicants need to supply proof of Rockland residency. The deadline for nominations is March 30. The post of Rockland Poet Laureate, which carries no financial compensation, will be for a two-year term and the Poet Laureate may be reappointed for a second term.

Maine Senior Poet Laureate

Entries are now being accepted for regional winners in the 18th annual National Senior Poets Laureate Poetry Competition for American poets age 50 and older. Deadline is June 30. Winning poems of state senior poets laureate will be named in July, and they will advance to final rounds of competition from which the winner of $500 and the 2010 National Senior Poet Laureate title will be announced around Sept. 1.

Paul Averill Liebow, M.D., of Bucksport won the 2009 Maine Senior Poet Laureate Award with his poem “Thoughts on Watching the Bangor Troop Greeters.” Winner of the 2009 National Senior Poet Laureate Award was Patricia Frolander, 66, a rancher from Sundance, Wyo. Co-sponsors Vera-Jane Goodin Schultz and Wanda Sue Parrott founded the contest administered by Amy Kitchener’s Angels Without Wings Foundation in 1993. The 2009 winners can be seen in “Golden Words Anthology,” along with rules and application for the 2010 Senior Poets Laureate Contest, at amykitchenerfdn.org.
