Stephen Goodrich Lawton Jr., 83, formerly of Rockport, died Feb. 20, 2010, at Anderson Inn surrounded by his family.

Born in Providence, R.I., Aug. 26, 1926, he was the son of Stephen G. and Nellie May (Goff) Lawton. He attended St. Dunstan’s School in Providence.

The family later moved to Rockport, where he graduated from Rockport High School. During World War II, Steve served in the Army and was stationed in Korea. On Sept. 5, 1948, he married Joan M. Carver at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Camden.

Steve and Joan lived in Rockport, where he owned and operated a poultry business for 25 years. He later worked at Stinson’s Canning Company in Rockland for 12 years before retiring. He was a communicant of St. Thomas Episcopal Church; a member of the American Legion in Camden; a member of St. Paul’s Masonic Lodge 82 in Rockport for more than 60 years; and also was a member of the Royal Arch Chapter.

Steve enjoyed working on challenging crossword puzzles and watching baseball. He will be remembered as a very kind, caring and devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend.

The Lawton family is most appreciative to the many caregivers at Anderson Inn who provided excellent care to Steve and his family during his illness.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Joan C. Lawton, of Camden; a son, Kenneth G. Lawton, and his companion, Karen Barrett, of Belmont; a sister, Betty Ann Bartlett, and her husband, Robert, of Oakland; a grandson, Christopher S. Lawton, and his companion, Michelle Bailey, of Camden; a step-grandson, Scot Orchow, and his wife, Erika, and their son, Maxwell, of Portland; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be 6 to 8 p.m., with a Masonic service at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 24 at the Long Funeral Home, 9 Mountain St. The funeral Mass will be held Thursday, Feb. 25 at 2 p.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church on Chestnut St. The Rev. John Rafter will officiate. Burial will be held in the spring in Amesbury Hill Cemetery in Rockport.
