The Belfast third- and fourth-grade boys travel basketball team took on, and defeated, six opponents to win the championship of a tournament held Feb. 19-21 at the Bangor YMCA.

Belfast made the trek to the Bangor YMCA to play one game Feb. 19 and three Feb. 20 to advance to the semifinal round.

On Feb. 21, Belfast won its semifinal matchup, pitting it against finalist Houlton. Belfast fought hard all weekend and proved worthy as the little Lions bested Houlton to win the championship.

Ten teams competed in the event, including Bangor, Hermon, Coastal Thunder, Houlton, Calais, Glenburn, Bucksport, Carmel, Waterville and Belfast.

There also was a two-man shooting drill that four young players from each team could compete in. Belfast’s Stanley Sturgis Jr. and Tyler Bartlett took first place. The competition consisted of 40 youths.

Players from Belfast who participated included Devindale Reynolds, grade 3; Grady Doolan, grade 3; Ricky Smith, grade 4; Stanley Sturgis Jr., grade 4; Tyler Bartlett grade, grade 4; Dean Grass grade, grade 4; Connor Kneeland, grade 4; Dakoda Doolan, grade 4; Liam MacMillan, grade 4; and Sam Goguen, grade 4. The team is coached by Penson Bartlett and Larry Doolan.
