Students at the Nickerson School in Swanville did not let the lack of snow keep them from holding their own Winter Olympics Feb 26.

The event, which was originally planned to take place outside, was moved inside.

Students used shoeboxes for snowshoes, played floor hockey, participated in a biathlon, competed in a luge event using scooters and also constructed Canadian flags.

The Olympic event was held after the student body walked a combined 3,387 miles, the total distance from Maine to Vancouver, as part of the state program “Take Time.”

The program encourages exercise above and beyond what is provided in physical education classes, according to the school’s program coordinator, Cindy Boguen.

Two times a week the students walked together and the fifth-graders wore pedometers to log the mileage. In past years, the students have walked to Tokyo and Mexico.
