A fund-raising event at the Waldo County Technical Center has raised about $1,200 so far to help support a Haitian school devastated by the January earthquake.

On Feb. 24, students in the culinary arts program held a dinner at the school. About 75 people attended the dinner, and the students raised $527 through that event.

Students in each department have been holding various events to raise funds and a doughnut-eating contest, sponsored by the law enforcement and fire science classes, is scheduled for Wednesday, March 3.

Technology Coordinator Bob Provan said he has been in touch with officials from the Salvation Army, who are working to partner the Technical Center with a high-school level school in Haiti.

Provan and his wife Joyce also agreed to match the student-raised funds up to $1,000.

The school held a similar event to raise money in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
