The Belfast Area High School Class of 1970 is helping a classmate raise money to support her native country of Chile, devastated by an earthquake Feb. 27.

Nilda Arriagada-Diaz spent her senior year living with Orman and Marion Whitcomb, and attending Belfast Area High School as an American Field Service foreign exchange student for academic year 1969-70.

Arriagada-Diaz married fellow BAHS classmate Steve Collins and the two now reside in Annapolis, Md.

As the class of 1970 prepares for its 40th reunion this summer, one class member suggested a special class project as a tribute to their Chilean classmate.

The class of 1970 encourages classmates and their families, other BAHS alumni and anyone concerned to help Chile in its time of need. For a year, Arriagada-Diaz Collins was a bright light in Belfast. Now the area can express its appreciation by helping her native land.

Arriagada-Diaz Collins and her husband have recommended donations be sent to Habitat for Humanity and Save the Children.

Donations can be placed directly through these links:
