On March 9, the Waldo County Commissioners approved a tax rate of 0.00147199, or roughly $1.47 per thousand dollars of property value. Last year the tax rate was 0.00151227. The county operates on a calendar year, and the release of the tax figures this week will give most municipalities hard numbers to work with at their respective town meetings, the bulk of which occur in March.

According to county records, the 2010 rate is the lowest since at least 2002. During that period the rate peaked in 2004 at 0.00182547, or $1.82 per thousand dollars of assessed value.

The overall assessment for 2010 of $7,101,470.89 comes in at $196,000 below the state’s LD 1 cap on state, county and municipal growth. The law is intended to lower Maine’s state and local tax burden ranking to the middle one-third of states by 2015.
