The First Church in Belfast, United Church of Christ invites all to  Holy Week services. The week before Easter is a very sacred time for Christians everywhere. Beginning with Palm Sunday, remembering Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem, the week recounts special times such as Jesus’ last supper with his disciples, his crucifixion, and of course his resurrection on Easter morning. These events are recalled in the special services held during this week.

On March 28, Palm Sunday services will be at the regular 10 a.m. worship time. The sanctuary will be decked out with palms and the choir will have special music for the day.

On Thursday, April 1, there will be a Maundy Thursday service at 6 p.m. in the upper room of the parish house, located at 55 Spring St. All are invited for a simple soup supper and a dramatic portrayal of that night.

On Good Friday, April 2, the day commemorating Jesus’ trial and crucifixion, the congregation will join with members of other churches at the Greater Bay Area Ministerium-sponsored Good Friday service being held at Midcoast Christian Fellowship, located on Patterson Hill Road (behind East Belfast Elementary School). The service will begin at 6 p.m. and will include reflections from area pastors on the traditional “Seven Last Words of Christ.”

Easter will begin with the ecumenical sunrise service at the Belfast Boathouse at 6 a.m. Then the youth of First Church will serve a delicious breakfast at 8 a.m. in the upstairs hall of the parish house (ADA-accessible). At 10 a.m. there will be Easter worship in the sanctuary, followed by Pastor Kate’s Easter Basket Fun, where she hands out gifts to all the young ones. The First Church is located at 104 Church St., near downtown Belfast.
