A crowd of Winterport residents gathered outside the Old Winterport Commercial House on Main Street March 12 to kick-off a series of celebrations of the town’s 150th anniversary.

March 12 is the official date that Winterport separated from the territory of Frankfort in 1860. Present-day Town Manager Phil Pitula dressed in period costume for the event, and read several documents pertaining to the creation of the town.

Present-day State Representative Mike Thibodeau (R-Winterport) brought a sentiment from the Legislature recognizing the milestone, and Thibodeau read the document aloud and presented it to Town Councilor Sam Butler, who is also well-known for his many years of service to the town’s ambulance and fire departments.

This summer, a week-long series of events from August 1-7 will culminate with the town’s annual Music Festival at the Vicki Grant Community Park on Saturday, August 7. Plans for the summer programs are still being finalized and will be announced later this spring.
