Now that the weather is showing signs of perking up, although the recent heavy rains may quickly put a damper on things, outdoor activities are following suit. The Northport Golf Club announced it will greet the spring and officially try to open its doors on Saturday, April 3, weather permitting.

The club will be open seven days a week from dawn until dusk however the allowance of carts will depend on ground conditions.

John Fleming, who volunteers at the club, is particularly pleased with the early opening date, “about two weeks ahead of where the course would normally be,” he said.

“This is one of our earliest openings,” he said. “For Maine, this is just great.” Fleming said that since he began playing in the early 1970s he could not remember the club being open so early.

This will be the Club’s 94th season and in celebration the club will be offering a $94 discount to new members, according to Fleming. He said that a family can join the club for $791 and a single can sign up for $496.

This year, the club is trying to push junior, 18 and under, memberships. For example, they will continue a program where Waldo county junior members can join for $100 dollars. The normal rate is $130.

Last year, the season ended with 24 junior members and the club’s first junior tournament. Youth involvement is something Fleming would like to see more of this season and beyond.

“We’ve done well with our junior program and they are our future so we are hoping to build on that,” he said, “That’s the big hope for the course this year, that we can keep building on the junior program.”
