Kenneth Dean Mitchell Jr., 78, died March 29, 2010, at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta.

Born March 29, 1932, in Camden, he was a son of Kenneth D. and Alice (Bryant) Mitchell. Ken grew up in Rockport and was a 1950 graduate of Camden High School.

He served in the Air Force from 1950 to 1954 and later served in Battery D, 703rd Division of the Maine National Guard for several years. On Jan. 14, 1967, he married Carol A. Hoffman in East Hartford, Conn., moving to Rockland that same year.

Ken was an advertising and marketing consultant with WRKD from 1961 to 1963 and with WABK into 1984. From 1984 until his retirement in 1997, he worked for Down East magazine in Midcoast and central Maine.

Active with community and civic organizations, Ken was a past president, officer and director of the Rockland Lions Club; a former officer and director of the Maine Lobster Festival; a member of the Rockland Jaycee’s Club; a former member and vice chairman of the Rockland Planning Commission; a former associate member of the Rockland Chamber of Commerce; a member of the Owls Head Transportation Museum; a member of Mid-Coast Ducks Unlimited; and a member of the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine.

Ken enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating and going to camp Down East. He will be fondly remembered for his gentle spirit and outgoing, friendly personality.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Carol Mitchell, of Rockland; four children, David Mitchell and his wife, Patricia, of Yarmouth, Christopher Mitchell and his wife, Karen, of Boston, Alycia Benner and her husband, John, of Belfast and Cynthia Geaghan of Orrington and her husband, Peter; three stepchildren, Sandra Williams of Owls Head, Anthony P. Jalbert of Rockland and Mark Jalbert of Mystic, Conn.; a sister, Lois Knowles, of Buxton; seven grandchildren; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a grandson, Daniel Kenneth Williams.

A memorial service followed by a reception will be held Friday, April 9, at 3 p.m. at the Rockland Congregational Church, 180 Limerock St., Rockland. The Rev. Seth D. Jones will officiate. Interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family.
