The Friends of Fort Knox, working in partnership with the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands, announced that the Fort grounds, Visitor Center, restrooms and gift shop will be open during school vacation week. The unusually warm weather prompted the Friends to contact the Bureau to ask if the state historic site might be opened earlier to accommodate visitors during school vacation week. The Bureau agreed to allow the Friends to open some of the Fort, but not the interior of the structure, due to the fact that state park rangers are not yet on duty.

The grounds, visitor center, restrooms and gift shop will be open Monday through Friday, April 19 to 23, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. daily. Friends of Fort Knox Executive Director Leon Seymour said, “We hope parents will take an opportunity to bring their children down during vacation week to have a picnic, fly a kite or explore the expansive grounds of Fort Knox.”

Fort Knox and the Penobscot Narrows Observatory officially open to the public Saturday, May 1, at 9 a.m., and will remain open until Oct. 31. Individuals who wish to learn more about the Friends of Fort Knox, the Fort, the Observatory and this year’s special events are encouraged to visit the organization’s Web site at fortknox.maineguide.com.
