Barbara (Harvey) Varney, 75, died unexpectedly at her home April 9, 2010.

She was born in Swanville on July 5, 1934, a daughter of Elroy and Evelyn (Dyer) Harvey; she was also the wife of Harold Varney.

She attended Crosby High School and was a lifelong resident of Belfast. She enjoyed going to the horse races and following politics and world news. In her earlier years Barbara worked for Johnson’s Restaurant and Penobscot Poultry. Barbara especially loved the time she spent caring for her grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Harold; her parents; four brothers, Elbert Lear, Elmer Harvey, Burton Harvey and Edward Harvey; and two sisters, Alfreda Lewis and Wilma Gomm.

Barbara is survived by two children, Craig Varney and his wife, Susan, of Belfast and Kristine Smith and her husband, Steve, of Worcester, Mass.; five grandchildren, Derek and his wife, Angela, Matthew, Jennifer, Laurie and Norman; six great-grandchildren, Brittney, Brandi, Jasmyne, Andrew, Anna and Abigail; two brothers, Tom Harvey of Indianapolis and Elroy “Junior” Harvey and his wife, Rena, of Bowdoin; three sisters, Ida Morin of Keene, N. H., Edith Phillips and her husband, Lee, of Belfast and Sharon Corbett and her husband, Daniel, of Augusta; a brother-in-law, Howard “Bud” Varney; three sisters-in-law, Lisa Lear, Hazel Ellis and Virginia Harvey; and several nieces and nephews.

Private services will be held later at the family’s convenience. In lieu of flowers friends may make memorial donations to the Maine Veterans Home, 310 Cony Road, Augusta, ME 04330 or the American Cancer Society, 1 Bowdoin Mill Island, Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086.
