Eric Leppanen is showing new work at Asymmetrick Arts, 405 Main St.. The show runs through the end of April.

Leppanen grew up in Owls Head, where the ocean and stars fascinated him and he tried to put their energy into his paintings. He completed his first abstract painting at age 12, painting with house paint on a large frame that he built and covered with an old sheet.

“In high school, I enjoyed art classes and learned the physics principle that ‘Energy is neither created nor destroyed, it just changes form’ and this idea has driven me ever since,” said the artist, who lives in Belfast.

Leppanen describes himself as a mainly a self-taught artist who tries to utilize the inspiration he receives from family, friends and the environment and turn it into form. He works with a wide variety of materials and mixed media, taking ideas, thoughts, colors, actions, materials and energy and letting the paint flow.
