Saturday, May 22, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Unity Area Regional Recycling Center in Thorndike will hold a household hazardous waste day.

Is there enough interest in putting on this event? Call the UARRC at 568-3117, or sign up at your town office. It is not necessary to preregister but the recycling center needs some sense of numbers. There are very helpful fliers at each town office that tell about the drop-off procedure. Call for more information.

This is an opportunity to safely dispose of household liquid waste that is considered flammable, corrosive, reactive, explosive or toxic. It is wrong, unsafe and irresponsible to get rid of your unwanted hazardous liquid by putting it down the drain, dumping it outside or putting it in the trash.

Neighbors can get together to make a unit, about 5 gallons, or roughly 20 pounds of solids. The cost per unit is $27. The UARRC is paying for the setup cost. There will be trained personnel from Auburn staffing the operation with knowledge and skill. They will take the waste and dispose of it safely.

All residents of member towns are welcome. Nonresidents are welcome with an additional fee.

Appropriate items include oil paint, varnishes, lacquers, stains, thinners, paint strippers, adhesives, degreasers, antifreeze, brake fluid, poisons, insecticides, weed killers, pesticides, lawn chemicals, moth balls, flea collars and sprays, hobby and artist’s supplies, photographic chemicals, chemistry sets, ammonia-based oven cleaners, drain openers, spot removers, pool cleaners, toilet cleaners, aerosol cans (not empty), driveway sealers, old fire extinguishers (carbon tetrachloride only).
