For Midcoast residents still not ready to say goodbye to the local youth basketball season, salvation comes this weekend.

The hardwood will be busy throughout the region this weekend as the first annual “Commotion By The Ocean” Basketball Tournament will be played Saturday and Sunday, April 24-25.

The round robin tournament, which will feature 33 teams from Portland to Fredericton, New Brunswick, is part of a statewide event hosted by Maine Basketball Report or

The Midcoast portion of the tourney will take place at four venues: Point Lookout in Northport, Lincolnville Central School, the Penobscot Bay YMCA in Rockport and the Rockland Community Building on Limerock Street. There also will be games, which will not feature local teams, at Noble High School in North Berwick.

Three local teams will participate in the tournament, two of which are girls squads. The Midcoast girls teams are Midcoast Warriors 15U Hawkes, coached by Ron Hawkes; and Midcoast Warriors 16U Dean, led by Missy Dean. 15U is for ages 15 and younger and 16U is 16 and younger.

The boys team is the Midcoast Hurricanes, coached by Billy Reynolds.

Teams will vary from U12 to U17, and will face opponents from different age groups depending on each team’s abilities. Each team is guaranteed anywhere from two to four games.

Games will feature two 16-minute halves with stop time.

The entry fees will be $4 for adults and $2 for children. Entry at one venue is valid at all four venues.

Midcoast Warriors 15U Hawkes — Saturday, April 24 at 11:45 a.m. versus Maine IceBreakers 15U at Point Lookout; Saturday, April 24 at 3 p.m. versus Warriors at Point Lookout; Sunday, April 25 at 8:30 a.m. versus Maniacs-Lamb at Rockland Community Building; and Sunday, April 25 at 9:35 a.m. versus Red Devils at Rockland Community Building.

Midcoast Warriors 16U Dean — Sunday, April 25 at 8:30 a.m. versus Maniacs-Lou at the Penobscot Bay YMCA; and Sunday, April 25 at 10:40 a.m. versus Maniacs-Pete at the YMCA.

Midcoast Hurricanes — Sunday, April 25 at 8:30 a.m. versus Pen. Pirates 15U at Point Lookout; and Sunday, April 25 at 9:35 a.m. versus Chillers at Point Lookout.
