It was not the best of days on the diamond for two Waldo County high school softball squads Thursday as both fell short in their bids to earn home victories.

Belfast (1-2) dropped a 9-1 decision to visiting Maranacook of Readfield, while Searsport (0-4) lost 8-5 to visiting Bangor Christian.Searsport. The Lions were to play Wednesday, but wet conditions forced the switch in days. The Vikings were scheduled to play Thursday.

Bangor Christian 8, Searsport 5 … At Searsport, Whitney Holmes belted a three-run, inside-the-park home run in the seventh inning to help lead Bangor Christian to the victory over the host Vikings, who were swinging for their first win of the campaign.

Holmes also had a single and three runs for the Patriots, while Rachel Guimond added two singles, a double and two runs. Pitcher Beth DeCoste recorded nine strikeouts pitching for Bangor Christian.

Katherine Cotter and Olivia Quigley both collected two singles and knocked in a run for Searsport, while Megan Higgins added two singles and a run. Quigley, who had missed recent time due to an injury, pitched for the Vikings.

Bangor Christian (2-2), which compiled eight hits and an error, tallied two runs in the first and sixth innings and four in the seventh. Searsport, which had 10 hits and three fielding miscues, tallied two runs in the fifth stanza and three more in the seventh.

Maranacook 9, Belfast 1 … At Belfast, pitcher Sarah Maxwell allowed one run on two hits and a walk, while striking out five to help lift the Black Bears of Readfield.

Katie Shaw hit a solo home run in the third inning for the Black Bears. Maxwell had two singles and two RBIs and Katie Dore added two singles and a run.

Hayley Rae doubled in the first inning and Victoria Overlock brought her home with a double for the lone BAHS run. Overlock pitched for the Lions.

Maranacook (3-0), which had nine hits and no errors, tallied four runs in the first inning, one in the third and two in each of the fourth and fifth stanzas. The Lions finished with two hits and four field miscues.
