The Searsport District High School softball squad had battled hard during its first six games, but could never get over the hump to secure a victory. That all changed Friday afternoon.

The Vikings (1-6) downed Sumner for an impressive 13-2 road win. SDHS had suffered a bundle of close losses and a few lopsided defeats earlier this season, but, on this day, the Viking experienced a convincing win.

Leading the suddenly potent Searsport offense were Olivia Quigley (3 singles, 3 RBIs), Megan Higgins (2 singles, 2 runs, 2 RBIs), Shannon Higgins (2 singles, 2 runs, 2 RBIs), Christin Chase (single, 3 RBIs) and Marisa Higgins (single, 2 runs). Sara Bradshaw also scored three runs for the visitors.

Clarissa West had an RBI-triple and a single to lead Sumner.

Quigley, who has battled injuries this season, earned the pitching win for the Vikings. She allowed five hits and no walks, while striking out five. Muriel Lockhart pitched for Sumner, scattering nine hits and eight walks, with eight strikeouts.

Searsport, which crossed the plate in each stanza, scored three runs in the first inning, one in the second, two in the third, one in both the fourth and fifth, two in the sixth and three in the seventh. The Vikings mustered nine hits and made only one error.

The Tigers, which had five hits and five errors, tallied single runs in the first and sixth stanzas.
