Portland Ballet invites choreographers to submit dances for the ninth annual Portland Dances! New Works Showcase, which will take place Aug. 20 and 21 at the new Westbrook Performing Arts Center. This annual showcase provides local choreographers with an opportunity to create and present a variety of dance genres in a theater setting. The deadline for submissions for this year’s performances is Friday, May 21.

Proposals need to be sent to Portland Dances! New Works Showcase, C/O Portland Ballet, 517 Forest Avenue, Suite 2,  Portland, ME 04101. The proposal must include a sample of the intended choreography accompanied by the music for the piece on video or DVD and a letter of choreographic intent regarding the piece, along with title and length of dance (not longer than eight minutes), number of dancers required, composer and title of music and any other relevant details.

The proposal must also include a $10 fee per application (checks made payable to Portland Ballet) and contact information including name, address, telephone and e-mail. Only one choreographic idea per proposal will be accepted and no solo works are permitted.

Last year, Rockport Dance Conservatory director Kari Cameron was among the selected choreographers. This year, 10 pieces will be selected for the showcase. Only completed applications submitted on time will be considered. Portland Dances! New Works Showcase will notify choreographers by May 28 if their piece will be presented.

Portland Ballet will provide studio time free of charge for rehearsal during June, July and August, as well as performing space with a Marley floor, sound system and access to a lighting designer for each choreographed work. In addition, a DVD of accepted work will be sent to each choreographer along with any reviews at the conclusion of the Portland Dances! New Works Showcase.
