Girl Scouts of Maine Cadette Troop 521 are working on The Snuggles Project, a Take Action community service initiative designed to raise awareness of the plight of homeless animals and bring comfort to those in overcrowded shelters.

The Snuggles Project is associated with the nonprofit organization Hugs for Homeless Animals, which was founded 1996 and is dedicated to providing relief to homeless and displaced animals worldwide. Snuggles are security blankets that are given to animals awaiting new homes. The blankets give animals something to snuggle up with, providing them with physical and psychological comfort.

Girl Scout Troop 521 is organizing a Snuggles drive and seeking support from individuals and community organizations willing to donate time or supplies to make the pet blankets. Family members, church groups and most recently, the Waldo County YMCA Knitting Group, have learned about the project and expressed interest in volunteering. Several Snuggles have already been donated to the Sexton Animal Shelter at the Camden Rockport Animal Rescue League in Rockport.

Anyone interested in donating materials or volunteering to help make Snuggles should contact Meredith Hill at 322-4048. Other essential supplies for local animal shelters, such as food, toys and cat litter, would also be appreciated.
