A youth fishing event will be held Saturday, June 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Ayer Park in memory of Mike Sabins.

Ayer Park is on the shore of Seven Tree Pond located about a mile south of the Union Common on Route 235 and was chosen because it is easy to find and is well suited to a children’s event.

The event is sanctioned by the Hooked on Fishing program. The public is welcome and no pre-registration is required. Fishing equipment and bait will be provided, along with refreshments. Children are encouraged to attend the event with an adult.

This 11th annual event is for the Mike Sabins Memorial Youth Fish and Game organization. In response to the death of their son Mike, Scot and Mary Sabins of Union are organizing a group focused on teaching Maine children about their outdoor heritage. Mike was an avid hunter and fisherman. The couple offers fishing events each year in winter and early summer. This is the sixth year that the spring event has been held. They hope to be able to offer additional events, activities and courses for young people to experience the Maine outdoors.

This event annually draws more than 100 children, parents and volunteers. Many catch their first fish at the event.

Hooked on Fishing is a program to promote youth and family togetherness through fishing, and is run by the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife to encourage youth fishing activities. Many local businesses support the event with donations of cash, supplies and volunteer effort.
