Thanks to the efforts of Olivia Quigley and Evan Kingsbury, among others, host Searsport sent Sumner of East Sullivan home empty-handed following a sweep in baseball and softball Friday afternoon.

The Viking softball team (4-10) beat Summer (4-11) 5-4 in eight innings, while the Viking baseball squad (7-6-1) bested the Tigers of East Sullivan 10-0 in five innings.

The Searsport baseball team (68.7500 Heal Points) is sixth and in solid playoff position in Eastern Class C, while Stearns of Millinocket (13-1, 82.0201 points) is first in the 20-team region. The top 10 teams qualify for the playoffs.

The Viking softball squad will have a more difficult time trying to make the playoffs. SDHS (4-10, 23.2422 points) is 14th, while George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill (10-5, 79.2969 points) is first in the region. The top 10 teams qualify for the postseason.


Olivia Quigley, who has been the most consistent all-around player for the Vikings this season, gave herself a complete-game pitching victory by driving in the winning run with a single up the middle with runners at second and third in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Quigley finished with a double, two singles and four RBIs for the Vikings. Shannon Higgins tripled and Sara Bradshaw doubled for the hosts.

Emily Leighton singled three times, Hunter Rivers doubled twice and Marion Lockhart singled twice for the Tigers.

Searsport, which had six hits and three errors, scored three runs in the fourth inning and one in each of the sixth and eight stanzas. Sumner, which had 11 hits and three fielding miscues, scored single runs in the first and third innings and two in the fifth.


Evan Kingsbury tossed a three-hit shutout with one walk and six strikeouts to lift Searsport over Sumner.

Offensively, Shane Seekins added a double, single, RBI and run for the Vikings. Zach Beaudry hit an run-scoring single and scored three runs.

Brendan Tenney, Mike Crowley and Tommy Bell singled for Sumner.

Searsport, which mustered eight hits and made one error, scored five runs in the second inning, one in the third and two in each of the fourth and fifth innings. Sumner finished with three hits and three errors.
