Applications are now being accepted for the 2010 Dana M. Whitten scholarship, a $1,000 prize awarded annually to a senior graduating from Belfast Area High School who intends to pursue a degree in the fields of medicine, childhood education or services for children. The recipient shall have demonstrated his or her commitment to caring for and improving the lives of children. Applicants should contact the guidance office at Belfast Area High School by June 4 for more information.

Dana M. Whitten M.D. has been a pediatrician in Belfast since 1976. He graduated from Harvard College with a bachelor’s degree in 1961 and received his M.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1965. He completed his medical training in pediatric hematology and oncology at New England Medical Center. Whitten works full-time with Dr. Joseph Anderson and Dr. Jan Gorton at Belfast Pediatrics, with offices at Waldo County Hospital.

The Dana M. Whitten scholarship was established by Belfast Pediatrics in October 2006 to commemorate Whitten’s 30 years of dedication to the children of Midcoast Maine. Recipients have gone on to pursue degrees in nursing and child-related fields at several local universities.
