The Bangor-based Black Bear Boys U16 soccer team, that includes a handful of Midcoast athletes, defeated Portland-based Odyssey 2-1 to win the State Cup final May 23 at Deering High School.

After months of practice and playing elimination games among premier teams in the state, the rivals squared off for the championship game. The local players managed to hold their own during an action-packed 80-minute regulation game and an additional 30 minutes of overtime play.

Among the athletes on the Black Bear team are Andrew Flanagan, Malcolm Steele, Sam Predham and Wyatt Lafreniere of Camden Hills Regional High School; Windham Veevaert, Yanni Rakis and Tyler Baker of Belfast Area High School; and Zoli Kertesz of Mount View High School in Thorndike.

The other team members are from Waterville, Winslow, Bangor and Fairfield. Veteran coach Seth Brown, who also is the Husson University men’s soccer coach, said his team’s championship win was “a great victory for a group of dedicated and talented boys.”

The team will advance to the Region I tournament starting July 1 in West Virginia.
