A Belfast man was injured June 2 after he apparently passed out while driving and crashed into some trees.

According to the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office, John E. Holland, 42, of Belfast was driving south on Route 1 in Northport at about 2:20 p.m. June 2 when he either fell asleep, passed out or blacked out. Police said Holland then drifted to the right side of the road, and when he attempted to get back into his lane, he over-corrected and drove across the northbound lane sideways, turning 180 degrees. Holland’s car left the east side of the roadway, bounced off several large pine trees and broke off some smaller trees, police said.

Damage to the 2001 Subaru station wagon Holland was driving was estimated at $2,000. Deputy James Porter, as well as Belfast Ambulance and Rescue Service and Northport First Responders, responded to the scene of the accident. Police said Holland, who blacked out several times while being treated by EMTs, was taken to Waldo County General Hospital, where he was being treated for unknown injuries.
