The Belfast girls tennis squad ended a strong overall campaign with a 4-0 loss to host Caribou in an Eastern Class B quarterfinal playoff match Wednesday.

No. 3 Caribou (13-0) beat No. 6 Belfast (9-4) 4-0 in a match cut short by rain. In fact, the Vikings were looking for a 5-0 win as they led in the final individual match at first singles when the overall team match was halted due to rain.

The individual match results, with Caribou players listed first, were: In singles, Jenna Selander had beaten Shashanna Moll, 6-2, in the first set and led 5-3 in the second when the match was canceled due to rain; Laura Collins defeated Rosie LaCivita, 7-5, 7-5; and Carlee Pinette beat Sierra Ventura, 6-2, 6-2.

In doubles, Missy Nadeau and Liz Barbosa bested Renna Smith and Ashton Fancy, 6-1, 6-0; and Ashley Richards and Katie Keaton beat Jane Ouillette and Liz MacAvoy, 6-0, 6-0.

In state singles play over the weekend at Bates College in Lewiston, both Moll and LaCivita participated. LaCivita lost her first match to a John Bapst opponent (score unavailable).

Moll won her first match over an opponent from Lewiston, 6-1, 6-0, to advance to the Round of 16. The young Lion advanced to play the second-ranked player in the state from Brunswick. Moll lost 3-6, 0-6.

“But the score does not reflect how she played,” said Belfast boys tennis coach Jen Cameron of Moll. “She played great and was making really smart shots, but it was just hard to get a rhythm going against an opponent like that. [Moll] fought hard. Shashanna is only a freshman and really stood out at this tournament, I feel she is only going to get better and really be a quality competitor in future competitions.”
