Rockland District High School junior Luke Morrill keeps his eyes on the ball as it sails out of the Rockport Recreation Park during the May 30 Russo home run derby. Morrill, who has signed a letter of intent to play Division I college baseball at the University of Maine in Orono, won the high school division of the ninth annual event. Morrill also won the middle school division a few years ago. “I was really surprised how well I hit and it was really good to take part in it again,” said Morril, who has competed in the derby for a few years. “That ball I hit,” he said about his pose in this photo, “felt real good. I kept my weight back on it and drove it pretty hard.” Morrill said it took him some time to adjust from using an in-game swing to a home run swing during the competition, but he eventually got in his groove. “Oh, yeah,” he said. “That’s the best feeling,” he said about hitting a ball over the fence. “When you get it right, you barely feel the ball hit the bat and on a couple of those it’s just nice and smooth and you get to watch it for a ways.”
